Kate Morgan — The Lady of the Del | American Folklore Series

She checked in. She never checked out.

On November 24, 1892, a young woman arrived at the Hotel del Coronado in Coronado, California. She signed the registry as "Mrs. Lottie A. Bernard, Detroit." Staff described her as ladylike, beautiful, well-dressed — and deeply troubled.

Her real name was Kate Morgan. She was 27 years old. She was alone.

Five days later — November 29, 1892 — her body was found on the exterior staircase leading to the beach. A gunshot wound to the head. Ruled a suicide. Case closed.

Except the bullet found in her head didn't match her gun.

Kate's life had been marked by loss from the very beginning. Her mother died when she was just one year old. Her father remarried and moved away. She married Thomas Morgan in 1885. On Halloween night, 1886, she gave birth to a son. He lived two days. The gravestone in this image is real.

By 1892 she was ill, alone, and traveling under a false name to one of the most glamorous hotels in California. No one came to meet her. No one came for her body.

The Hotel del Coronado never forgot her. Guests in Room 3327 report flickering lights, cold spots, the scent of flowers with no source, and a woman's reflection in the mirror who shouldn't be there. The hotel's Heritage Department published an official book about her: The Beautiful Stranger: The Ghost of Kate Morgan and The Hotel del Coronado.

She is their most famous resident. She has never left.

Assemble the pieces. Learn her story. And whatever you do — don't look in the mirror.
